Asian ceramics are an influence on my cameo platters, their simple and elegant shape is a foil for the intense colour and detail of the applied flowers. The satin texture and layered streak colour have a depth reminiscent of richly patinated wood.
My blown platters have a very thin "flash" or layer of coloured glass which I carefully engrave by taking away fine layers to thin the colour down into lighter shades. This involves the smallest diamond and other burrs in a drill at its slowest speed. Lighting from behind and water dribbling over the work make for a challenging session at the workbench.
